Biography of Mimi Rothschild, Learning By Grace Online Homeschooling Programs Co-Founder

Mimi Rothschild is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Learning By Grace, a leading provider of Christian online homeschooling programs. Since 2001, under Rothschild's leadership, Learning By Grace has been blessed to serve families from all over the world with its innovative and quality Christian online homeschooling curricula. Throughout her thirty year long professional history, Rothschild has experience in education, technology, manufacturing and retail. One thread ties her experiences together and that is her passion for children.

At the age of ten, Mimi Rothschild launched her lifelong career in children's rights advocacy by collecting money door to door for starving Biafran children. Although merely a child herself, inaction was not in Mimi Rothschild's vocabulary. Shortly thereafter, Rothschild became the youngest person to lead the one of the first American Freedom From Hunger Foundation's Walk on Hunger in 1970.

Upon graduating from college in 1979, Mimi Rothschild married the love of her life, Howard Mandel, and shortly thereafter together they launched the Rothschild Doll Company. One of the missions of the doll company was to provide an economic base to single mothers while simultaneously providing children with beautiful playthings. Countless Jamaican and Haitian single women were provided with desperately needed employment opportunities through the Rothschild Doll Company.

In 1983, when Mimi Rothschild's first child was born, she decided that "public schools were not healthy for children and other living things" to rephrase a popular 60's slogan. She authored a manuscript entitled Children at Risk as a response to the government sponsored report called "Nation at Risk". Both reports expound on the hows and whats of the statement "If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might have well as viewed it as an act of war."

Rothschild homeschooled her children throughout the 80s and 90s, when she had to actually explain to everyone what homeschooling was. Rothschild co-founded the Massachusetts Home Learning Association in the very office of famous homeschooling pioneer and author of Teach Your Own. This organization is still dedicated to serving homeschoolers throughout the state twenty years later. Rothschild formed homeschool support groups when there was no such word describing them and held art workshops, science labs, field trips, gym classes for homeschoolers all because she believed that to be a good homeschooler, she did not necessarily have to do everything herself and that by developing community resources (when there were none) she was giving her children "socialization" experiences.

In the early 1990s, Mimi Rothschild launched a chain of children's clothing stores. These stores employed local homeschoolers as well providing real life lessons in business to her own growing family. In addition to marketing quality clothes through her stores, she used the proceeds to ship clothing and excess inventory to orphanages in Guatemala and Russia as well as shoes, socks and other essential clothing to children in her own backyard at the Children's Seashore House, a facility for rehabilitation of children in Philadelphia.

While on bedrest during her triplet pregnancy, Mimi Rothschild needed to come up with an ongoing project for her then 14, 12, 10 and 7 year old homeschooling children. They all decided to write a book together than would help other homeschooling families learn how to use the then new and burgeoning world wide web in their education. As a fluke, the Mandel kids sent the kids book proposal to McGraw Hill. Imagine their delight when the manuscript was accepted for publication! Mimi Rothschild co-authored Cyberspace for Kids, an Internet guide for children, with the Mandel Kids which later evolved into a four book series. Imagine how thrilling it must have been for her children when they saw their books on display at the local Borders bookstore. She would also go on to author Teen Resources on the Web: A Guide for Librarians, Parents and Teachers as well as hundreds of articles on every facet of homeschooling.

In 1997, life dramatically changed forever for the Mimi Rothschild and her family. Howard and Mimi's precious son Andrew Mandel died tragically from medical negligence. Crushed and heartbroken, Mimi channeled her anguish into the creation of the National Organization for Children. This non-profit advocacy group was dedicated to the promotion of health, education, and welfare of children.

Shortly after Andrew's death, Mimi's infant son spent the next two years on life support, in and out of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Units fighting for his life. Her baby had 23 trips to the operating room in his first 23 months of life. Although more than challenging at times, Rothschild learned to trusted the Lord profoundly. During hospitalizations, Mimi brought all 4 of her children with her for their 12 hours days, every day. Thanks to the hospitals new library with its spanking new bank of internet connected computers the Mandel children did their homeschooling online. But it was extraordinarily hard because each day Mimi had to plan something new for the kids to do on the computer. This was when the idea for an online homeschooling program that would do all that work that she was struggling to do every day by herself came to her. She realized that not only her homeschooled kids but many of the other chrinically ill children need a school that can come to them---through the web! How amazing that the very idea for a world wide online homeschooling program would be born in her son's nursery at the Children's Seashore House where Mimi years before had donated clothing.

Realizing that the internet could be deliver K-12 educational experiences unlike any other, Mimi Rothschild purposed in her heart to find a way to give children this brand new educational solutions. By leveraging the power of the internet, a relatively new medium of communication in 1997, she could create daily lesson plans once and they could be used by all hospitalized kids. If these children couldn't make it to the classroom, she would bring the classroom to them. And why limit the online homeschooling solution to ill children? Homeschooling families everywhere could benefit from an online delivery of their school work.

Over the past 12 years, the seeds of the original online homeschooling program idea that were planted through the adversity of tragedy and illness have blossomed into a full grown and mature number of successful online Academies which include The Grace Academy (curriculum and teachers), The Jubilee Academy (just curriculum), The MorningStar Academy (private, registered online Christian school), The Southern Baptist Academy and The Cambridge Academy (non christian private registered school). The Academies offer 150 full year, 180 lesson courses with and without teacher support. Hundreds of seniors have graduated from their online private schools.

In 2007, the Mandel family was blessed with a 9th child through her oldest daughters marriage. Mimi's son in law and daughter were blessed with a baby boy making Mimi a (very young) grandmother, an experience which she is thoroughly enjoying. As she says "All the joy and no work!" Mimi is rejoicing in expectation of a brand new granddaughter in just a few weeks.

Thanks to our heavenly Father's unfailing grace, Riley, whose chronic illness and long term hospitalizations provided the backdrop for the vision for the online homeschooling programs, recently celebrated his 12th birthday and is thriving and loving the Lord! While the Mandels all miss Andrew every day, they know they will share eternity with him, so for the blink they are here on earth, they will continue to do God's will and be thankful they had him for the short time they did, since God didn't have to create him at all. Most preeminently, Mimi Rothschild has learned that beyond a shadow of a doubt, "all things work together for the good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

As far as the first half century goes, Rothschild says "God is Magnificent".

Mimi, I hadn't seen this blog before. It's nice to find this little bit of personal history. But now you have to talk about a 2nd grandchild don't you? :~)
