Mimi Rothschild on How to Navigate the Online HomeSchooling Jungle
Feb 5 2010, 3:42 PM EST
I get many letters from folks asking me how to help them navigate the jungle of choices available so that you can find the ones that will best meet your family’s needs. Our guiding principle as we examine online learning is finding solutions that meet both the homeschooling parents and their children’s needs. What is your need? More time, more help, more peace? Or do you need solutions that engage your children more, that address their style of learning better? Or do you just not feel qualified in all of the subjects? Many parents have communicated to me over the years that they are committed to homeschooling their children but do not feel they can teach some subjects. Some students , especially as they enter their teens, excel when they have an outside adult to be accountable to. For those families, an online program that offers teachers is an ideal way to meet their need. Some student’s learning style flourishes with a multimedia curriculum filled with videos and games. Online courses that have videos, games and simulations will help ensure that this student stays engaged. Some of us parents are fully occupied (and yes, often overwhelmed and even well on our way to full fledge burn out) with other children or our work outside the home. An online program that offers a private school may meet this family’s need. Identifying our needs as a family, as a homeschooling parent and those of our individual children will be a theme we will return to again and again throughout this blog because homeschooling is about tailoring our programs to meet our needs, rather than accommodating someone else’s.2 out of 2 found this valuable.
